History of Naha Port

Trading hub to Eastern Asia

Naha Port serves as a hub for exchanges of people and goods in
Okinawa, Japan's southernmost prefecture. It originated in 1264 when
the then King of Chuzan, who governed the interior region of mainland
Okinawa, built an official mansion (Tomari Goten) and temple (Seigenji)
at Tomari Port (Present Tomari Wharf).
Trade with China began in the 14th Century, and after Shohashi - the
King of Chuzan - united the Ryukyus to establish the Ryukyu Kingdom,
trade with Japan, China, Korea, and other contries in Southeast Asia
began to really prosper. The port has continued to develop as an
important trading hub of East Asia ever since.

Keystone

During the postwar era, with Okinawa's reversion to Japan in 1972, as Naha city consolidates management of three harbours (Naha north harbour, Tomari harbour and Shinko harbour), Naha port was nominated as a major port.
The primary port plan of Naha has been set forth in 1974 which integrated Urasoe wharf into Naha port, straithtening of the break water harbour district traffic and boat rested area and securing wharf lands, harbour related sites and green zone to consolidate logistic networks linked to not only mainland of Japan and neighboring Asian countries but major remote islands. Handling volume in 1981 was targetedat 7,400,000tons (Domestic: 6,800,000tons, International: 600,000tons) After that, the plan has been revised to enhance wharf strengthening and functionality in response to vessel's diversification, its upsizing and changes with time on ocean resort. In year 2000, targeted handling volume has boosted up to 12,400,000tons (Domestic: 10,800,000tons, International: 1,600,000tons) and also agreed an expansion in Shinko wharf area and northerly development in Urasoe wharf area. In addition, based on Okinawa promotion plan, new port plan has been adopted in 2003 to aim at a global distribution port.
Based on revised port plan, two container berth with 14m water depth in Shinko wharf has been built and being in operation by Naha International Container Terminal, Inc.
